A new generation of jazz fans?

November 2, 2007

While doing research for my internship at Time Out New York Kids, I came across this listing and couldn’t help but mention it here.

The famous Jazz Standard and its restaurant, Blue Smoke, offer a Jazz for Kids-program every Sunday from one to three pm. Described as “informal,” the program includes educational aspects but also encourages impromptu dancing. Music is provided by the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, a free and talent-based program for young musicians.

Jazz for kids doesn’t ask for a cover charge, but instead encourages a $5 donation to benefit its Jazz Discovery Program, whose mission is to uphold a connection between New York’s school children and jazz as an art form.

Jazz is an undeniable part of New York’s culture, and it’s nice to see that some of its heavyweights are making real efforts to introduce the city’s youngest to the jazz concert experience.
